Family correspondence, 1844-1896.

This collection primarily includes correspondence between William Wade Griscom and his family while he was at Benjamin Hallowell's boarding school in Alexandria, Virginia. Correspondents include his father, William, his stepmother, Sarah Whitelock, and his sister, Hannah S. Included are grade reports from Friends Central School and from Alexandria Boarding School, descriptions by William Wade Griscom of his trips to Washington, D.C., and an account of a lecture by Horace Mann. Also included are letters from Lucy M. Cooper to her daughter Sarah, written while the latter was attending the Sharon Boarding School. The collection provides details on the daily life and education of Quaker youth in the 19th century.

William Wade Griscom was a birthright Quaker. He was born in 1831, the son of William and Mary Griscom. His sister was Hannah S. Griscom. After the death of William Wade's mother, William Sr. married Sarah Whitelock. William Wade moved to Woodbury, N.J., where he married Sarah Cooper, the daughter of James and Lucy Middletown Cooper.
